According to preliminary reports, the tragedy was due to 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate. This explosive chemical compound was at the port for some years.

Lebanese Prime Minister Hassan Diab previously blamed the devastating blast on a huge stockpile of ammonium nitrate. This is an agricultural fertilizer which they have been keeping at the airport since 2014.
The explosion inflicted damage of over 10 billion on the city according to the early estimates. Surprisingly others are comparing it to an earthquake of 3.3-magnitude.
But people miles away from the blast site have been feeling the effects of the blast.
People were saying it is Israel which was behind this but they were quick to distance themselves from it.
Secondly people said it was Islamic groups which did this, but non has come out to take responsibility.
Of recent Israel has been carrying out air strikes in the neighboring Lebanon.
Many people thought it was a bomb looking at its devastating effects. But reports so far are talking of different causes. So the government of Lebanon is telling people not to bring their conspiracies on this.
And this is happening in a country which is having political instabilities and infightings.
