With the law, Artists were to submit their work to a select committee at UCC and approve it before they produce it. Also Artists were to get licenses from UCC before performing any where
Following a meeting between artists and the minister, they are going to form a committee to look into this law.
Nabakooba has now suspended the regulations pending consultations.
She will instruct the Committee of ICT to handle the matter and provide public hearings to the union.
Why Minister Nabakooza has suspended new laws regulating the arts industry
First of all, the new laws were introduced not in good faith.
Secondly, others claim they want to manage Bobi Wine who is winning people’s sympathy through music.
Thirdly there is a claim that artists were using music to attack government. The artists the public mention are Bobi Wine, Kiwewa, Bizonto and others.
These have appeared in the government’s bad books of recent following the cases of sectarianism.
Fourthly, there is a claim that artists were crossing to Bobi’s NUP. They see the government pushing them to the wall.
Recently, over 84 artists crossed to NUP and got party cards a move that stressed other parties.
Lastly, this law was making the government un popular.
Performing artists and allied workers met the speaker Kadaga over the regulations. They say the law is unfavorable.
Those who met Kadaga are Ykee Benda, Rema, Alex Muhangi among others.
In the meeting artists told the speaker, the law hinders arts industry. Immediate follow up to take on into the matter, Kadaga notes.
