As elections nears, the mood is also high among the electorate. This is equally the same in the minds of those who want to contest for the presidency. A number of people have already shown interests and as of now the total is at 36 aspirants.
Among the notable figures is Dr Kiiza Besigye who has contested in all the last four elections. However this time Besigye says is not contesting because of the reasons he says are obvious.
Besigye claims that he has been winning all the past four elections against president Museveni. He believes that has been winning since 2001 but Museveni can not let him be the president. In 2001 and 2006 court ruled that there were electro irregularities but were not enough to change the out come. So this validates Besigye claims.
I won all the four elections against president Museveni, But this is why am not the president – Besigye says
Why am not the president.
Firstly, Besigye says elections in Uganda are not free and fair. Secondly, to Besigye, Museveni enjoys the advantage of an incumbent like using security. Thirdly, Besigye says Museveni campaigns even before the official campaign begins.
Further more Besigye says Museveni uses security to block opposition rallies yet for him is campaigning. At the same time Museveni uses government resources to campaign.
”Sometimes we wonder whether the opposition should participate in the already rigged elections. By the opposition participating they are legitimizing the elections”, Besigye says.
If this is the case, why is it that incumbents in other African countries use the same tricks Museveni uses but loose the election. Surprisingly, this shows that their is chance for success in these elections. What about strategizing well to have the success they want.
However the real question should be the quality of the opposition participating seem to be so weak. So these can not defeat president Museveni. And most times the opposition fields fewer candidates in the position of MP, LC5 and other important positions.
But for NRM it always fields large number of candidates. Surprisingly, this signifies the weakness of the opposition on the ground. Because these local leaders do a lot of donkey work to look for votes.
In conclusion Dr Kiiza Besigye and the opposition should re-strategies if they want to win the elections.
